Xbox is cleaning up its retail footprint. Starting this November, Microsoft is phasing out traditional plastic gift cards in favor of a new, fully biodegradable paper design. The company has partnered with retail giants like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy to launch these eco-friendly cards across North America.
They might look like the standard cards hanging on store racks, but they are entirely different under the surface. Made from FSC-certified paper and printed with soy-based inks, these cards break down naturally in a backyard compost pile. But the real draw for gamers is what comes with the digital code. To celebrate the launch, Microsoft is tying these new cards to exclusive Xbox Game Pass Ultimate bonuses throughout November 2026.
Ditching the PVC
Every year, millions of PVC gift cards end up in landfills. They sit there for centuries. Microsoft wants to stop that. The new initiative is part of the company’s broader pledge to become carbon negative and achieve zero waste by 2030. They want to show that physical retail can coexist with environmental responsibility.
“We looked at our physical retail footprint and realized gift cards were a major source of single-use plastic,” said Dave McCarthy, Corporate Vice President of Xbox Operations. “By switching to a highly durable, compostable paper fiber, we can keep tons of plastic out of the environment. Shoppers still get a physical gift to wrap, but without the ecological guilt.”
The cards feel surprisingly premium. They feature a textured finish that mimics the weight of plastic but uses zero petroleum products. Even the scratch-off backing, which traditionally uses a metallic plastic laminate, has been redesigned. Microsoft developed a water-soluble, non-toxic scratch coat that peels off cleanly and dissolves safely in water systems.
Exclusive November Bonuses
Microsoft knows that saving the planet is a great goal, but gamers also want value. To drive adoption of the new medium, the company is packing these eco-cards with exclusive perks for November 2026. The incentives are designed to get players through the door during the busy pre-holiday shopping rush.

Anyone who purchases one of the new green cards during its launch month will receive a bonus code for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Depending on the value of the card, players can get up to a full month of Game Pass Ultimate for free. Additionally, Microsoft is throwing in exclusive in-game cosmetics for some of this fall’s biggest multiplayer games.
The bonuses are tiered based on how much you spend:
- $25 Eco-Card: Comes with a code for 7 days of Game Pass Ultimate and a unique weapon skin.
- $50 Eco-Card: Includes 14 days of Game Pass Ultimate and a rare character cosmetic bundle.
- $100 Eco-Card: Grants a full month of Game Pass Ultimate, exclusive vehicle skins, and 1,000 bonus in-game credits.
These offers are only active through November 30, 2026. That makes them a hot commodity for early holiday shoppers looking to maximize their gaming budget.
Retailers Rally Behind the Green Push
Securing prime shelf space at major retail outlets can be tough. However, stores like Target and Walmart were eager to jump on board. Both companies have set their own aggressive sustainability goals, and replacing plastic cards helps them meet those targets quickly.
“Our guests are constantly looking for ways to reduce their environmental footprint,” said a representative from Target’s entertainment division. “Microsoft’s new paper gift cards fit perfectly into our green retail strategy. It is a win for the player and a win for the environment.”
The rollout will start in the United States and Canada before expanding to European markets in early 2027. Microsoft hopes other gaming companies will follow their lead. If the entire industry shifts away from PVC cards, the environmental impact could be massive. Millions of tons of plastic waste would simply vanish from the retail cycle.
For now, gamers have a simple choice this holiday season. You can grab a plastic card that will outlive us all, or you can go green, grab some free Game Pass time, and help clean up the hobby.
