A father and his teenage son remain in hospital in critical condition after being repeatedly stabbed by two masked intruders inside their village home. Detectives investigating the midnight assault say the violence appears to have been completely unprovoked.
The incident took place in Thurnby, a quiet Leicestershire village situated just east of Leicester. Emergency crews were dispatched to a property on Station Road at roughly 00:25 BST on Thursday following frantic emergency calls about a disturbance inside the family residence.
Brutal Assault Leaves Two Fighting for Life
Leicestershire Police confirmed that two men wearing masks forced their way into the house before launching an immediate, violent assault on the occupants. Inside, the attackers set upon a man in his 50s, inflicting multiple stab wounds. His 15-year-old son was also stabbed during the violent struggle.
Paramedics rushed both victims to the hospital, where medical staff continue to treat them for life-threatening injuries. Police confirmed on Friday that their conditions remain critical.
A woman in her 40s, the boy’s mother, sustained minor injuries to her shoulder and hand as she tried to intervene or protect her family. Three other children were inside the home at the time. While they were not physically injured, police said the emotional impact on the young survivors has been profound.
Armed Response and Search for Suspects
Due to reports of weapons and extreme violence, Leicestershire Police scrambled armed units to Station Road. By the time officers arrived, however, the assailants had already fled into the night.
Specialist investigators from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) have since taken over the case. Detectives and forensic teams spent Thursday and Friday searching the property, combing gardens, and reviewing street footage to trace the suspects’ escape route.
Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, who is leading the inquiry, stressed the urgency of tracking down the individuals responsible.

“This was a violent attack against a family in their own home which appears to have been completely unprovoked,” Det Insp Granville said. “Our investigation to understand what happened and why—and identify those behind such a horrific criminal act—is going to continue over the weekend.”
She emphasized that locating the attackers remains the force’s absolute priority: “I’m making a direct appeal to people in Thurnby and the surrounding communities to come forward with any information if they haven’t already done so. We owe it to the victims to locate the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
Police Appeal for Dashcam and Doorbell Footage
Officers are particularly interested in anyone who was driving through or walking near the scene late Wednesday night and into the early hours of Thursday morning.
Investigators are seeking information from anyone who noticed anything out of place in the following areas:
- Station Road, Thurnby, between 23:00 on Wednesday and the early hours of Thursday
- Somerby Road and adjoining residential avenues during the same timeframe
- Motorists who passed through the village with active dashboard cameras
- Residents with video doorbells, private CCTV, or external security sensors
“Anything you’re able to provide, no matter how insignificant you think it might be, could help us,” Det Insp Granville added. A major incident public portal has been launched online, allowing members of the public to upload video files and submit anonymous tips directly to the inquiry team.
Shock in a Peaceful Community
The violent home invasion has shocked residents in Thurnby, a suburban settlement known more for rural footpaths and low crime rates than serious violence. High-visibility patrols have been stepped up across the area to reassure anxious neighbors.
Simon Galton, who represents Thurnby and Houghton on the local council, said the news had stunned the entire neighborhood.
“Thurnby is a quiet place, yes we have anti-social behaviour, but we don’t have serious violent crime of this nature,” Councillor Galton said, adding that he was “absolutely appalled” by the attack on a local family in their own home.
No arrests have been made so far. Forensic officers remain stationed along Station Road as the search for evidence expands into the weekend.
