Three Men Found Guilty in Murders of Foreign Surfers in Mexico

Three Men Found Guilty in Murders of Foreign Surfers in Mexico

Posted on October 10, 2026 by rashedulalam5197@gmail.com

Three men have been found guilty in Mexico for the brutal murders of two Australian brothers and an American friend who vanished during a coastal camping trip in Baja California last year.

The Ensenada court delivered the verdict following a high-profile prosecution that drew global headlines and laid bare the lingering risks travelers face in remote pockets of the peninsula. Brothers Callum Robinson, 33, and Jake Robinson, 30, alongside their friend Jack Carter Rhoad, 30, were killed in late April 2024 while on a dream surfing holiday along a secluded stretch of coastline south of Ensenada.

An Ambush Over Truck Tires

State prosecutors established that the victims were attacked while camping at Punta San José, a rugged surf spot roughly 50 miles south of Ensenada. What began as an attempted robbery quickly escalated into an execution.

Investigators told the court that the attackers drove up to the surfers’ makeshift camp to strip parts from their white Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck, particularly the tires. When the tourists resisted, the assailants pulled handguns and shot all three men in the head. The perpetrators then hauled the bodies away in an attempt to hide the crime, setting fire to the surfers’ tents and vehicle before dumping their remains down an abandoned cliffside well.

The well, located more than four miles from the campsite and measuring over 50 feet deep, held the three tourists along with a fourth decomposed body belonging to the property’s previous owner, who had vanished months prior.

Key Evidence and Fast Arrests

The men disappeared on April 27, 2024, after failing to check into an Airbnb they had booked in the resort town of Rosarito. Alarms were first raised by the Robinson brothers’ mother, Debra Robinson, who posted desperate appeals across local social media groups asking if anyone had seen her sons.

Mexican federal and state authorities moved unusually fast. Within days, forensic teams traced the victims’ stolen mobile phones. One device was found in the possession of a local woman, leading investigators directly to the primary suspect, Jesús Gerardo García Cota, known locally by the alias “El Kekas.”

Ballistic evidence recovered from the campsite matched a weapon seized from the suspects. Shell casings, tire tracks, and bloodstains near the burnt-out tents sealed the case. The court convicted García Cota alongside two accomplices on charges including aggravated homicide and criminal conspiracy.

Grief and International Fallout

The killings sent shockwaves through Australia and the United States. Callum Robinson had lived in San Diego, playing professional lacrosse and working in sports marketing, while his younger brother Jake, a doctor, had traveled from Perth to visit him for an epic Pacific road trip. Rhoad, an American technology professional from Atlanta, was due to marry his fiancée just months after the trip.

Following the discovery of the bodies, the Robinson parents traveled to Mexico to formally identify their sons. In an emotional press appearance in San Diego shortly after, Debra and Martin Robinson remembered their boys as compassionate, adventurous spirits who loved the ocean.

“Our hearts are broken. The world has lost three wonderful young men,” their mother told reporters at the time, thanking authorities and ordinary citizens in Mexico who held vigils and rallied against cartel violence.

A Scrutinized Justice System

While the verdict brings legal closure to the families, it highlights the stark contrast between how crimes against foreign tourists and local residents are handled in Mexico. Hundreds of Ensenada residents staged protests outside local government offices following the murders, carrying surfboards inscribed with slogans like “Ensenada is not safe” and “Justice for all.”

Baja California has long been popular with American and Australian surfers drawn to its uncrowded point breaks and laid-back fishing villages. But the region has also been gripped by turf battles between factions of the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels, as well as predatory local gangs operating on the fringes of organized crime.

Sentencing hearings for the three convicted men are scheduled for the coming weeks, where prosecutors have stated they will seek the maximum prison penalties allowed under state law.
