Night City is heading to the big screen. Paramount Pictures has officially partnered with video game developer CD Projekt Red to bring the sci-fi role-playing hit Cyberpunk 2077 to life in a new live-action film.
To help guide the project, the Hollywood studio is working with veteran producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, best known for his work on the massive Transformers franchise. We don’t know who will star in the film, what the plot will cover, or when it will hit theaters. But the creators are already hyped.
Michał Nowakowski, joint-chief executive of CD Projekt Red, said in a statement that the company is “excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise.”
From Glitches to Gold
It is a remarkable turnaround for a property that had a notoriously rocky start. When Cyberpunk 2077 launched in late 2020, it was plagued by intense technical bugs. Yet, the developers stuck with it. Today, the game has sold over 40 million copies worldwide. Its massive popularity was further cemented by the 2023 expansion, Phantom Liberty, which starred Idris Elba and sold more than 15 million copies.
The original game features Hollywood star Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand, a rebel rockstar and digital ghost trapped inside the mind of the protagonist, V. Together, they navigate the corrupt, neon-lit streets of Night City, a dystopian California metropolis ruled by the ruthless Arasaka megacorporation. Whether Reeves or Elba will appear in the live-action movie has not been confirmed.
A Proven Track Record on Screen
This isn’t the first time the Cyberpunk universe has jumped to other media. Netflix previously found massive success with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an acclaimed animated spin-off. A second season is scheduled to debut on the streaming platform later this month. CD Projekt Red also saw its fantasy hit, The Witcher, turned into a massive Netflix series. That show originally starred Henry Cavill before Liam Hemsworth took over the role of Geralt of Rivia for the fourth season.
Adapting games for the big and small screen has become one of Hollywood’s most lucrative trends. Movies based on Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, and the upcoming Minecraft film have collectively pulled in billions of dollars. Meanwhile, television projects like HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime Video’s Fallout have set viewership records. The trend is so dominant that Xbox parent company Microsoft just launched a dedicated “XP” division to focus on licensing its video games for films, theme parks, and other media.
The film announcement also comes during major corporate shifts for Paramount. The studio recently finalized a $110 billion merger with Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery. While the newly merged entity has promised to release 30 movies a year over the next two years, the industry shakeup has also sparked concerns about potential job cuts and rising subscription costs for streaming services like Paramount+.
